Two Student Assistant Jobs at the Hannah Arendt Edition (Deadline 30 July 2024)

The Hannah Arendt Edition team is looking for two student colleagues with an interest in / knowledge of TEI transcription to join us as soon as possible.

The Critical Edition of the Works of Hannah Arendt (https://hannah-arendt-edition.net / https://www.arendt-research-center.de) has been in development at Freie Universität Berlin since 2020. Arendt, who is one of the most important political and philosophical intellectuals of the 20th century, published primarily in English and German; the edition is therefore also multilingual. Parallel to the print version of the edition, a digital platform is being created on which Arendt's works and supplementary material will be made accessible in line with current developments in the field of digital editing.

Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the project in the digital transcription of texts using the TEI-XML markup language (markup language for humanities projects of the 'Text Encoding Initiative': http://www.tei-c.org) and their initial content indexing.
  • Supporting the preparation and realization of scientific events of the edition.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Studies in the field of humanities, social or cultural sciences or a computer science-related subject with a focus on digital humanities as well as an interest in the study of Hannah Arendt's works.   
  • Willingness to familiarize yourself with an editor-supported working environment (TextGrid and Oxygen XML Editor).
  • Knowledge of TEI-XML or willingness and ability to quickly familiarize yourself with the markup language.
  • Experience in reading and transcribing manuscripts and typescripts, basic knowledge of text editing conventions.
